Kanyakumari Matti Banana
The Kanyakumari Matti Banana, also locally known as Matti Pazham, is a unique banana cultivar hailing from the Agatheeswaram, Thovalai and Thiruvattar taluks of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. Characterized by its compact size and a 2.5–3 cm “crocodile mouth” apex, its distinct, wind-blown hands give it a charming appearance. It offers a fragrant, mildly sweet-tart flavor, complemented by a firm yet powdery flesh—attributes that make it well-suited even for infants, thanks to its lower sugar content (~8.7 TSS) which reduces the risk of gastrointestinal upset.
Nutritionally, the Matti banana is rich in potassium and manganese (contributing up to 13 % of daily requirements), dietary fiber, essential vitamins, and minerals. Beyond its nutritional value, traditional medicinal uses include employing its stem (corm) extract to aid in jaundice treatment, and its gentle composition supports digestive health for those with ulcers or kidney-related issues. Recognized for its cultural significance and unique terroir, the Matti banana earned a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in July 2023, securing its identity and protecting local farmers’ heritage
